Synthetic Diesel Oil

Synthetic diesel oil is the preferred lubricant for many engine manufacturers. While some synthetic oil is manmade, the majority of these lubricants are created by refining crude oil further than is required to create conventional oil. The final product has a different chemical structure and fewer impurities, such as paraffin wax and loose carbon molecules, which can turn into sludge. Because synthetic oils have consistent-sized molecules, chemists can produce oil that is more stable and provides enhanced performance characteristics. Extensive testing demonstrates that synthetic diesel oil provides better protection and durability.

Because synthetic oils flow easier than conventional oil, it can reach and lubricate the diesel engine faster. It can also penetrate smaller spaces, which is crucial for engines manufactured with tighter tolerances. Synthetic oil is less affected by extreme temperatures. It flows more freely during cold weather and withstands higher temperatures better than conventional oil. This is important if the engine operates in colder climates or runs at the higher RPMs and temperatures, which can occur when the vehicle is towing a trailer. These efficient lubricants make it possible to use lighter weight oil, which reduces parasitic drag within the engine resulting in increased torque, horsepower and fuel economy.

While synthetic diesel oil costs more than its conventional counterpart, it usually lasts longer, so it does not need to be changed as often. Studies have shown that engines that use synthetic products burn less oil because the lubricant has more efficient sealant characteristics, which results in fewer leaks as the fluid flows through various engine components. Synthetic oils also clean better. Another benefit of this environmentally friendly product is that there is less used oil to dispose. The use of less oil offsets some of the maintenance cost and enables companies to become more “green” in their operations. Fewer oil changes also reduce the number of hours required to service the diesel engine, which also saves money. New fuel efficiency and emission standards set forth in legislation governing the automobile and trucking industries are only possible with the use of synthetic motor oil.

There are three types of synthetic diesel oils. Conventional synthetics are manufactured from mineral oil. Pure synthetic diesel oil is created in a laboratory. Semi-synthetic oils are a blend of conventional and mineral oils. Each type of oil has its own set of performance characteristics and price points. To select the most appropriate diesel oil for a particular application, research the engine manufacturer’s recommendations, compare the oil’s performance characteristics and cost. Potential synthetic diesel options include AMSOIL Premium, Synthetic Blend, Heavy Duty Diesel and Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Motor Oil.
